I have been creating beautiful, hand painted silk wearables for over 36 years. Timeless and flattering, Shekina Designs are comfortable and practical for the wearer.

All year round, I exhibit at art shows around the country where I meet enthusiastic customers who are interested in my work.

My innate pull toward the arts was enhanced and fostered by my mother; a buyer of women’s sportswear for A & S, a department store in NYC. After moving the family to the suburbs in the 1950’s, my sister and I became her new canvas; dressing us in the latest fashion trends, continuing her passion for fashion. Roaming through her closet sparked my imagination… a fascinating world of shoes, furs and costume jewelry.

While homesteading in Maine in the 1970’s, I taught myself to sew on a treadle sewing machine.

During enrollment at Humboldt State University in the 1980’s, I took a summer internship with the Metropolitan Museum Costume Collection in NYC, through the Theatre Development Fund. This influenced my decision to major in Textile Arts. In a surface design class, Painting on Silk was offered. I experienced the exquisite way the fabric took the dyes and I was hooked.

I received my BA degree in Textile Arts in 1982.

Inspiration

Beauty is my north, and the inner compass guides me there; paying attention to the world around me; patterns in nature, cultural expressions, or the simple texture of the cloth.

Taking a classic silhouette of a blouse or a jacket, combining that with the drape of silk, on the body in motion; The result is one of a harmonious, symphonic expression of grace, flow and beauty.
